App Router

Route organization

• app/ layout-based routing — each route is a folder with page.tsx
• Layouts (layout.tsx): shared UI, persists across navigations, does not re-render
• Templates (template.tsx): re-mounts on every navigation — use for enter/exit animations
• Route groups (group): organize without affecting the URL
• Parallel routes @slot: render multiple pages simultaneously in one layout

Server Components (default)

• Every component in app/ is a Server Component by default
• Fetch data directly — no need for useEffect, useState for data
• async component OK — async function Page() { const data = await fetch(...) }
• DO NOT use: hooks (useState, useEffect), browser APIs, event handlers

Client Components

• Mark with 'use client' at the top of the file
• Only when needed: interactivity, hooks, browser APIs, event listeners
• Push 'use client' as deep as possible — Server Component wraps Client Component, not the other way around

Server Actions

• Use for mutations (create, update, delete)
• Optimistic updates with useOptimistic
• Validate input with Zod — Server Actions receive untrusted input
