cursor

A setup guide for adding code-refactoring rules to Cursor, an editor with an AI coding assistant. The rules tell Cursor to read code, diagnose problems, plan changes, apply them with tests and summarise the result.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to configure .cursor/rules/refactor.mdc or Cursor's global rules, then ask for tasks such as extracting logic, shortening functions or replacing nested callbacks.
Why use it?
It gives Cursor project-specific or global guidance for handling refactoring requests in a consistent way.

Agent

Getting it into your agent

One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

When invoked 307 The whole file, excluding the scripts and references it only reads on demand.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00307
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00153
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00061
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00031

Measured yesterday against content hash e58c23f4dbfd, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

cursor scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

What it actually says

Setup: Cursor

Two options — project-scoped rules or global rules.

Create .cursor/rules/refactor.mdc in your project root:

mkdir -p .cursor/rules
curl -o .cursor/rules/refactor.mdc \
  https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MuhiminOsim/code-refactoring-skill/main/PROMPT.md

Cursor automatically loads .cursor/rules/*.mdc for every conversation in that project.

Option B: Global Rules

  1. Open Cursor → Settings → General → Rules for AI
  2. Paste the contents of PROMPT.md into the rules field
  3. The skill is now active for all projects

Usage

Trigger with any natural phrase:

  • "Refactor this function"
  • "This is too long, clean it up"
  • "Extract the discount logic"
  • "Replace these callbacks with async/await"

Cursor will run the 5-phase process: read → diagnose → plan → execute (with tests) → summarize.

With Reference Files

For the full knowledge base (Cursor supports @file references):

# Clone into your project or a shared location
git clone https://github.com/MuhiminOsim/code-refactoring-skill .cursor/refactor-skill

Then in conversation: @.cursor/refactor-skill/references/catalog-composing.md to pull in specific catalog sections.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

cursor is an agent published in the GitHub repository MuhiminOsim/code-refactoring-skill (5 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 307 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
