zed

A setup for using Zed, a code editor, with a project-wide .rules file that supplies instructions to its AI assistant.

In plain words
What is it for?
Guiding Zed's AI assistant during refactoring tasks such as splitting long functions, extracting logic, and replacing nested conditions with guard clauses.
Why use it?
It lets full refactoring sessions use shared project guidance, while noting that Zed's inline assistant does not use the full prompt. The example also describes a separate settings-based setup.

Getting it into your agent

One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

Per session 0 Only the description is in the session, so the agent can decide to use it. The body loads when it is invoked.
When invoked 263 The whole file, excluding the scripts and references it only reads on demand.
Security scan A 1 finding. Scan, not verified.
Origin original No closer match found in the catalogue.
Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00263
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00131
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00053
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00026

Measured 2d ago against content hash 71e7054c06c1, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

zed scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Not a fault in itself. Listed so you know the mod talks to something, and to what.

What it actually says

Setup: Zed

Zed loads .rules from the project root for AI context.

curl -o .rules \
  https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MuhiminOsim/code-refactoring-skill/main/PROMPT.md

Via Assistant System Prompt

  1. Open Zed → Settings (cmd+,) → search "assistant"
  2. Add to settings.json:
{
  "assistant": {
    "default_model": {
      "provider": "anthropic",
      "model": "claude-sonnet-4-6"
    },
    "version": "2"
  }
}

Then in the Assistant panel, click the system prompt icon and paste PROMPT.md.

Usage

Open the AI Assistant panel (cmd+?) and type:

Refactor the processOrder function — it's too long

Extract the discount logic into a separate function

Replace these nested if-statements with guard clauses

Note

Zed's inline assistant (ctrl+enter on selection) does not use the full system prompt — it's for targeted edits. For full refactoring sessions with smell detection and test-gating, use the Assistant panel.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

zed is an agent published in the GitHub repository MuhiminOsim/code-refactoring-skill (5 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 263 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
