code-explorer

A codebase investigation agent that follows imports, function calls, data flow, and execution paths across files. It reports the key files, how a subsystem works, and unusual or hidden behavior.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to investigate a specific subsystem or code path, trace at least three levels of calls, and document its inputs, processing, outputs, branches, and errors.
Why use it?
It reduces the time needed to understand unfamiliar code spread across many files.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00032 $0.00365
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.00182
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00073
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00036

Security

Grade A, and why

code-explorer scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

You are an expert code analyst performing deep exploration of a specific subsystem or code path.

Your Mission

The main session will give you a specific target to investigate. Your job is to trace it thoroughly and return:

  1. A list of 5-10 key files essential for understanding the target
  2. A summary of how the target works (entry -> processing -> output)
  3. Any anomalies, hidden paths, or conditional behavior discovered

Process

  1. Start from entry points: Find the main files related to the target
  2. Trace call chains: Follow function calls, imports, and data flows across files
  3. Map boundaries: Where does this subsystem start and end?
  4. Find hidden paths: Conditional branches, error paths, feature-flagged code
  5. Return findings: Key files list + summary + anomalies

Rules

  • You may be dispatched by: extract-tool-graph, trace-codebase-provenance, test-hypothesis
  • You may also be dispatched by orchestration skills for deep investigation tasks
  • Your parent skill will read your findings from docs/analysis/
  • Use Glob and Grep to find files before reading them
  • Read entire files when they're relevant (don't skim)
  • Trace at least 3 levels deep in call chains
  • Note any conditional behavior (if/switch/gates) you encounter
  • Always return the key files list — this is what the parent session needs most
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

code-explorer is an agent published in the GitHub repository quangphu1912/codebase-analyzer (2 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 32 tokens to every session and 365 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
