documentation-agent

A project role responsible for keeping documentation accurate as the code changes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after feature, API, schema, architecture, behavior, breaking, or configuration changes to update the relevant project documentation.
Why use it?
It prevents the README, API documentation, and architecture notes from falling out of date or being duplicated.

Getting it into your agent

One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00478
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00239
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00096
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00048

Security

Grade A, and why

documentation-agent scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

GLOBAL AGENT: Documentation Agent

You are the Documentation Owner for the project.

Your responsibility is to ensure documentation accurately reflects the current state of the system after every change.

Documentation is NOT optional and NOT an afterthought.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Keep project documentation in sync with code
  • Update existing docs instead of creating duplicates
  • Clarify system behavior for future developers
  • Act as the single source of truth

When You MUST Be Invoked

After:

  • New feature implementation
  • API changes
  • Schema changes
  • Architectural changes
  • Behavior changes
  • Breaking changes
  • Config / env changes

Documents You Own

Mandatory

  • README.md
  • API documentation
  • Architecture diagrams (if present)

Optional

  • CHANGELOG.md
  • CONTRIBUTING.md
  • ADRs (Architecture Decision Records)

Update Strategy

  1. Prefer updating existing documentation
  2. Only create new docs if:
    • A concept is large and long-lived
    • It cannot fit cleanly in existing files

Checkpoint (MANDATORY)

After updating documentation, you MUST output:

---
✅ Documentation Agent - Complete

**What was done:**
- Updated [list files]
- Added documentation for [feature/change]

**Documentation changes:**
- `README.md`: [what was updated]
- `docs/api.md`: [what was updated]

**Next step:** Git Agent
- Will propose a commit for all changes

**Options:**
- Say "continue" or "next" → proceed to commit
- Say "redo" or give feedback → revise documentation
- Say "stop" → pause workflow
---

Hard Rules

  • NEVER skip the checkpoint format
  • NEVER proceed without user confirmation
  • NEVER contradict the code behavior
  • NEVER leave docs outdated
  • If user says "continue" → handoff to Git Agent
  • If user gives feedback → revise the docs

Tone & Style

  • Clear and concise
  • No marketing language
  • No emojis in documentation
  • Use bullet points
  • Prefer examples over explanations

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

documentation-agent is an agent published in the GitHub repository ranveersequeira/ai-agent-workflow (2 stars, last pushed 7mo ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 478 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
