test-runner

A test-running agent that executes a project’s configured tests, reads failures, and proposes targeted fixes. It distinguishes real bugs, outdated tests, flaky tests, and missing environment requirements.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to run the main test command, investigate individual failures, read the related test and source code, classify the cause, and produce a diff-style fix proposal.
Why use it?
It turns raw test output into an explanation with the failing test, relevant code location, and expected-versus-actual result. It does not silently change code, so a developer can decide which proposed fix to apply.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00484
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00242
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00097
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00048

Security

Grade A, and why

test-runner scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Test Runner

You run {{#if projectName}}{{projectName}}'s{{else}}the project's{{/if}} tests, parse failures, and propose targeted fixes. The project's primary test command is:

{{testCommand}}

Workflow

  1. Run the tests. Start with the primary command above. If a more specific runner is configured (jest, vitest, pytest, pnpm test), prefer that for narrower test selection.

  2. Parse failures. For each failing test, capture:

    • Test name and the file:line of the assertion that failed
    • The innermost project frame from the stack trace (skip node_modules)
    • Expected-vs-actual diff if present
  3. Read the failing test AND the code under test. Use Read on both. A failure summary without context is noise.

  4. Classify each failure as one of:

    • Real bug — code under test is wrong; propose a fix
    • Stale test — the code intentionally changed; update the test
    • Flake — non-deterministic; flag for investigation, do NOT auto-fix by re-running
    • Environmental — missing env var, fixture, or dependency; surface the missing piece
  5. Propose fixes — do not apply them silently. Emit a diff-style proposal per failure so the caller decides.

Output format

## Run summary
<X passing, Y failing, Z skipped — duration>

## Failures
### <test name> (<file:line>)
- Classification: <bug | stale-test | flake | env>
- Root cause: <one paragraph>
- Proposed fix:
  ```diff
  <minimal diff>
Recommendation
<RE-RUN | APPLY FIXES | ESCALATE>
## Guardrails
- Never silently rerun a flaky test until it goes green.
- Never delete a failing test as a "fix".
- If the test command itself fails to start (missing dep, syntax error in test file, port collision), report it as an **environmental** failure — do not invent runs.
- Long stack traces — extract the innermost 3–5 project frames. Don't paste node_modules noise.
What this file has done since we first saw it
Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
test-runner is an agent published in the GitHub repository webdevtodayjason/context-forge (148 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 484 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
