createenv

A command that creates a Postman environment from settings and request references found in your code. Postman environments store reusable values such as service URLs and login tokens for API testing.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use /postman:createenv to create variables such as base URLs, tokens, API keys, and other configuration-driven values for synced Postman requests.
Why use it?
It avoids manually finding configuration values and prevents secrets from being guessed or exposed; secret fields are left blank for you to fill in.

Getting it into your agent

One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

When invoked 309 The whole file, excluding the scripts and references it only reads on demand.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00309
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00154
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00062
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00031

Security

Grade A, and why

createenv scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

/postman:createenv: generate an environment

Creates a Postman environment with variables inferred from your code, including the {{base_url}} and {{token}} variables that synced requests reference.

Usage

/postman:createenv [env_name]

If env_name is omitted, a name is generated from your framework, like fastapi env.

What it generates

  • {{base_url}} and {{token}}: the variables every synced request depends on.
  • Inferred variables: base URLs, auth tokens, API keys, and other config-driven values Claude finds by reading your project's configuration and the requests that reference them. Always from code, never guessed from a running server.

Secret handling

Any variable whose name matches key, token, secret, or password gets stored with Postman's "secret" type (masked in the UI) and flagged for manual fill. The tool never invents a secret value.

Example

/postman:createenv

ENV PREVIEW: "fastapi env"

  base_url = http://localhost:8000
token = <blank> (secret, masked, fill manually)

Create this environment in Postman? [y / n]

See secret handling for the full policy. Once the write result is shown, the command ends; no further analysis or follow-on commentary.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

createenv is a command published in the GitHub repository logesh-works/postman-mcp (1 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 309 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
