init

A one-time setup process for connecting KERNEL to a chosen Vaults directory, where it stores project information and work records.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to prepare folders for saved agent data, research, plans, handoffs, checkpoints, and retrospectives.
Why use it?
It confirms the directory before creating folders, reducing the chance of putting KERNEL's files in the wrong place.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00016 $0.00917
Opus 5 $0.00008 $0.00458
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00183
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00092

Security

Grade A, and why

init scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 115 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

KERNEL init

Explicit, once-per-machine setup. This skill never moves or replaces the whole ~/.claude directory.

Requirements

Git, SQLite 3, jq, Python 3, and Bash. Install the plugin first with the exact ID:

/plugin marketplace add ariaxhan/kernel-claude
/plugin install kernel@kernel-marketplace
/reload-plugins

Detection and confirmation

Locate the runtime selector at $HOME/.claude/plugins/cache/kernel-marketplace/kernel/current, source its hooks/scripts/common.sh, and call kernel_validate_runtime_root on the selected root. Stop if validation fails.

Call detect_vaults. Its order is: an existing valid KERNEL_VAULTS, $HOME/Documents/Vaults, $HOME/Vaults, $HOME/Downloads/Vaults, then the reported $HOME/Documents/Vaults fallback.

Before writing, show the exact Vaults path and ask:

Set up KERNEL in this Vaults directory?

Continue only after confirmation. A different path must be exported as KERNEL_VAULTS and detected again.

Writes

After confirmation, create only these directories when absent:

$VAULTS/_meta/agentdb
$VAULTS/_meta/research
$VAULTS/_meta/plans
$VAULTS/_meta/handoffs
$VAULTS/_meta/checkpoints
$VAULTS/_meta/retrospectives
$VAULTS/_meta/agents
$VAULTS/_meta/logs
$VAULTS/.claude/kernel
$VAULTS/.local/bin

Call kernel_update_current, then use kernel_init_host_link for exactly:

$VAULTS/.local/bin/agentdb          -> $CACHE/current/orchestration/agentdb/agentdb
$VAULTS/.claude/kernel/orchestration -> $CACHE/current/orchestration
$VAULTS/.claude/kernel/hooks         -> $CACHE/current/hooks

Missing links may be created. Correct links are unchanged. Recognizable numbered KERNEL links may be repaired. A regular file, directory, malformed link, or unrelated link is preserved and stops setup with an actionable message. Never force-replace links.

Initialize the database through the shared helper, which pins AgentDB to the selected Vaults even when init was invoked from another directory:

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

init is a skill published in the GitHub repository ariaxhan/kernel-claude (12 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 16 tokens to every session and 917 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
