brainstorming

A guided process for turning an idea into an agreed design before changing a project. It explores the codebase, asks clarifying questions, compares approaches, and records the design.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before creating features, components, functionality, or behavior changes, including small configuration or utility changes.
Why use it?
It exposes unclear requirements and trade-offs before implementation, reducing the chance of building the wrong behavior.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00037 $0.01021
Opus 5 $0.00018 $0.00511
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00204
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00102

Security

Grade A, and why

brainstorming scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Brainstorming Ideas Into Designs

Overview

Help turn ideas into fully formed designs and specs through natural collaborative dialogue.

Start by understanding the current project context, then ask questions one at a time to refine the idea. Once you understand what you're building, present the design and get user approval.

Anti-Pattern: "This Is Too Simple To Need A Design"

Every project goes through this process. A todo list, a single-function utility, a config change — all of them. "Simple" projects are where unexamined assumptions cause the most wasted work. The design can be short (a few sentences for truly simple projects), but you MUST present it and get approval.

Checklist

You MUST create a task for each of these items and complete them in order:

  1. Explore project context — check files, docs, recent commits
  2. Ask clarifying questions — one at a time, understand purpose/constraints/success criteria
  3. Propose 2-3 approaches — with trade-offs and your recommendation
  4. Present design — in sections scaled to their complexity, get user approval after each section
  5. Write design doc — save to docs/plans/YYYY-MM-DD-<topic>-design.md and commit
  6. Transition to implementation — invoke writing-plans skill to create implementation plan

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

brainstorming is a skill published in the GitHub repository compozy/kb (102 stars, last pushed 12d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 37 tokens to every session and 1,021 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. It is 100% identical to brainstorming, differing in 5 lines, and is treated as a copy.
