obsidian-vault

A tool for searching, creating, and organizing notes in an Obsidian vault, which is a folder of Markdown notes. It uses wikilinks—links written like [[Note Title]]—and index notes to connect related information.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to find notes, create new notes, add links to related notes, and discover notes that link back to a topic.
Why use it?
It removes the need to remember the vault's file locations, naming rules, and linking conventions. It helps keep a mostly flat collection of notes organized.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00043 $0.00414
Opus 5 $0.00022 $0.00207
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00083
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00041

Security

Grade A, and why

obsidian-vault scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Obsidian Vault

Vault location

/mnt/d/Obsidian Vault/AI Research/

Mostly flat at root level.

Naming conventions

  • Index notes: aggregate related topics (e.g., Ralph Wiggum Index.md, Skills Index.md, RAG Index.md)
  • Title case for all note names
  • No folders for organization - use links and index notes instead

Linking

  • Use Obsidian [[wikilinks]] syntax: [[Note Title]]
  • Notes link to dependencies/related notes at the bottom
  • Index notes are just lists of [[wikilinks]]

Workflows

Search for notes

# Search by filename
find "/mnt/d/Obsidian Vault/AI Research/" -name "*.md" | grep -i "keyword"

# Search by content
grep -rl "keyword" "/mnt/d/Obsidian Vault/AI Research/" --include="*.md"

Or use Grep/Glob tools directly on the vault path.

Create a new note

  1. Use Title Case for filename
  2. Write content as a unit of learning (per vault rules)
  3. Add [[wikilinks]] to related notes at the bottom
  4. If part of a numbered sequence, use the hierarchical numbering scheme

Find related notes

Search for [[Note Title]] across the vault to find backlinks:

grep -rl "\\[\\[Note Title\\]\\]" "/mnt/d/Obsidian Vault/AI Research/"

Find index notes

find "/mnt/d/Obsidian Vault/AI Research/" -name "*Index*"
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
