Migrate a code system

Make each migration stage independently deployable, observable, and reversible until evidence proves the old path can be removed. Do not load bundled references when this skill activates.

Inventory the transition

  1. Identify current and target contracts, producers, consumers, persisted data, deployment units, generated artifacts, and ownership boundaries.
  2. Determine which components can upgrade atomically and which cannot. Include older clients, delayed jobs, replayed events, rollback versions, and data written during the compatibility window.
  3. Define invariants that must hold in mixed-version operation.
  4. Read references/expand-contract-playbook.md for a compatibility matrix and phase gates when the transition spans deployments, stored data, or multiple repositories.

When a migration surface is known only by behavior, package, schema term, or protocol text, call code_context with action="search" once across authorized repositories to find its declared boundary. Skip it when the exact identifier is already known.

For every exact API, type, event, schema adapter, or migration entry-point symbol, use code_context to establish direct references/callers and bounded impact before sequencing rollout. Start at depth 1; preserve repository identity and treat dynamically unresolved cross-repository references as an inventory gap, not as absence of consumers. Once an exact boundary is selected, make the graph the next structural observation instead of continuing broad discovery.

Keep refresh=true for the first indexed query and after edits. Use refresh=false only for an immediate follow-up that intentionally reuses the same index version.

Read references/code-context-contract.md only after a result exposes ambiguity, cross-repository traversal, truncation, or dynamic-wiring limits.

Choose and sequence a strategy

Select the smallest safe strategy: expand/contract, adapter, dual read, dual write, backfill, feature-gated cutover, shadow traffic, or atomic replacement. State why its failure modes are acceptable here.
