wp-testing

A testing guide for WordPress plugins, themes, REST endpoints, and WooCommerce using PHPUnit. PHPUnit is a tool for running automated tests.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to add or configure WordPress integration tests, create test data, test REST endpoints, and run tests in wp-env.
Why use it?
It provides rules for creating isolated WordPress tests without changing real external services or manually cleaning the database.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00098 $0.07210
Opus 5 $0.00049 $0.03605
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.01442
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00721

Measured yesterday against content hash 7b6471805482, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

wp-testing scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

WordPress Testing with PHPUnit

Critical Rules

  • Always extend WP_UnitTestCase for integration tests. It provides automatic database transactions, factory methods, and WordPress-specific assertions.
  • Use WordPress factory methods ($this->factory->post, $this->factory->user, etc.) to create test data. Never insert directly into the database.
  • Database cleanup is automatic. WP_UnitTestCase wraps each test in a transaction and rolls back after completion. Do not manually truncate tables.
  • Never test WordPress core. Do not write tests to verify that add_action() fires or that get_post() returns a post. Trust core; test YOUR code.
  • Use wp-env for a reproducible local test environment. It provides a Docker-based WordPress installation with PHPUnit pre-configured.
  • Isolate external dependencies. Mock HTTP requests, emails, file system operations, and third-party APIs. Never let tests hit real external services.
  • One assertion concept per test. A test method should verify one logical behavior, even if that requires multiple assert* calls.

Test Bootstrap Setup

tests/bootstrap.php

<?php
/**
 * PHPUnit bootstrap file for the plugin.
 */

// Determine the WordPress test suite location.
$_tests_dir = getenv( 'WP_TESTS_DIR' );

if ( ! $_tests_dir ) {
    $_tests_dir = rtrim( sys_get_temp_dir(), '/\\' ) . '/wordpress-tests-lib';
}

// Verify the test suite exists.
if ( ! file_exists( "{$_tests_dir}/includes/functions.php" ) ) {
    echo "Could not find {$_tests_dir}/includes/functions.php, have you run bin/install-wp-tests.sh?" . PHP_EOL;
    exit( 1 );
}

// Give access to tests_add_filter() function.
require_once "{$_tests_dir}/includes/functions.php";

/**
 * Manually load the plugin being tested.
 */
function _manually_load_plugin() {
    require dirname( dirname( __FILE__ ) ) . '/my-plugin.php';
}
tests_add_filter( 'muplugins_loaded', '_manually_load_plugin' );

// Start up the WP testing environment.
require "{$_tests_dir}/includes/bootstrap.php";

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

wp-testing is a skill published in the GitHub repository iwritec0de/wp-dev (1 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 98 tokens to every session and 7,210 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
