opencode-mcp

A configuration guide for connecting OpenCode to MCP servers. MCP is a standard way for AI applications to use tools provided by other programs, either locally or over HTTP.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps configure local or remote MCP servers, set up OAuth sign-in, control server permissions for each agent, and manage tool connections.
Why use it?
It explains how to add, secure, enable, disable, and troubleshoot external tools, while showing how many enabled tools can consume the model's context space.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00072 $0.05486
Opus 5 $0.00036 $0.02743
Sonnet 5 $0.00014 $0.01097
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00549

Security

Grade A, and why

opencode-mcp scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

OpenCode MCP Servers

📚 Official Docs: For the latest information, always refer to the official documentation: https://opencode.ai/docs/mcp-servers/

Add local and remote MCP tools to OpenCode using the Model Context Protocol (MCP). MCP is a standard protocol that lets you connect external tool servers to AI applications. OpenCode supports both local servers (child processes) and remote servers (HTTP). Once added, MCP tools are automatically available to the LLM alongside OpenCode's built-in tools.

Context Caveat

When you use an MCP server, it adds tokens to the context. Every tool the MCP server exposes is described in the context window, which consumes tokens. This can quickly add up if you have a lot of tools from multiple MCP servers. Be careful with which MCP servers you enable.

  • Certain MCP servers, like the GitHub MCP server, tend to add a lot of tokens and can easily exceed the context limit.
  • Each additional MCP server multiplies the tool definitions injected into context.
  • Monitor your context window usage and be selective about which servers you enable.

Enable / Disable

MCP servers are defined in your OpenCode Config (opencode.json or opencode.jsonc) under the mcp key. Each server gets a unique name used to reference it in prompts and tool management.

{
  "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json",
  "mcp": {
    "name-of-mcp-server": {
      // ... server config ...
      "enabled": true
    },
    "name-of-other-mcp-server": {
      // ... server config ...
    }
  }
}
  • Set "enabled": true to explicitly enable a server.
  • Set "enabled": false to temporarily disable a server without removing its config.
  • If enabled is omitted, the server is enabled by default.

Local MCP Servers

Local servers run as child processes on your machine. Use "type": "local" with a command array.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

opencode-mcp is a skill published in the GitHub repository Timmy6942025/opencode-builder-skill (2 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 72 tokens to every session and 5,486 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
