obsidian-cli

A command-line interface for controlling the Obsidian note-taking app from a terminal. Obsidian stores notes in a searchable collection of files called a vault.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to open, search, create, and update notes; manage note properties and templates; inspect backlinks and orphan notes; and query Bases.
Why use it?
It lets an agent work with notes and the running Obsidian app through commands, including searches and links that are awkward to manage manually.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00082 $0.02319
Opus 5 $0.00041 $0.01159
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.00464
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00232

Security

Grade A, and why

obsidian-cli scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Obsidian CLI Skill

Control the running Obsidian app from the terminal. Supplementary tool alongside Read/Write/Edit, Glob, Grep, QMD, and Neo4j.

Prerequisites

  • Obsidian 1.12+ running (early access, Catalyst license)
  • CLI registered: Settings > General > Command line interface
  • Templates plugin: Settings > Core Plugins > Templates > Template folder → _templates
  • PATH: /Applications/Obsidian.app/Contents/MacOS (in ~/.zprofile)

Important: Noisy Output

The CLI outputs Loading updated app package... to stdout on every invocation. Always filter with grep -v:

obsidian orphans total 2>/dev/null | grep -v "Loading updated" # correct — clean output
obsidian orphans total # noisy output in agent context

Shorthand for all examples below: 2>/dev/null | grep -v "Loading updated" is abbreviated as 2>/dev/null for readability, but always include the full filter in practice.

When to Use CLI vs File Tools

Scenario Use CLI Use File Tools
Open a note in Obsidian UI obsidian open No equivalent
Read/write file content Either works Prefer Read/Write/Edit
Search vault content obsidian search Prefer Grep/QMD
Open today's daily note in Obsidian obsidian daily No equivalent
Append task to daily note obsidian daily:append Either
Create note from template obsidian create template=X Manual template apply
Check backlinks/orphans/unresolved obsidian backlinks/orphans Manual grep
Set/read properties (frontmatter) obsidian property:set Edit tool
Query a Base view obsidian base:query No equivalent
Execute Obsidian commands obsidian command No equivalent

Rule of thumb: CLI for Obsidian-app-specific actions (open files, trigger commands, query Bases, graph relationships). File tools for direct file manipulation.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
