substack

A tool for editing and publishing drafts on the Shakedown Shuffle Substack site through an existing logged-in browser session. It can update drafts and publish changes without emailing subscribers.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to read drafts, repair links or other draft content, save edits, publish updates, and verify the result afterward.
Why use it?
It removes the need to edit posts manually while checking that the logged-in session and saved changes work.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.01204
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00602
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00241
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00120

Measured 2d ago against content hash 391c497ca5b6, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

substack scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (index.js), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 82 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Substack Skill

Programmatic Substack editing for Shakedown Shuffle (shakedownshuffle.substack.com). Born from the 2026-07-26 issue-02 backlink repair — the first automated Substack edit.

How it works

  • Auth: rides the logged-in session inside the dedicated Chrome profile /Users/jtr/.codex/browser-profiles/shakedown-publishing-v3. No tokens, no secrets — the session cookie IS the credential.
  • Chrome is launched on demand on CDP 127.0.0.1:9223 (the supervisor launchd job is intentionally disabled; this skill spawns Chrome itself and records a launch marker).
  • API: Substack's internal draft API, driven by same-origin fetch from page context via CDP Runtime.evaluate:
    • GET /api/v1/drafts/{postId} → full draft incl. draft_body (stringified ProseMirror doc)
    • PUT /api/v1/drafts/{postId} with {draft_body} → saves draft
    • POST /api/v1/drafts/{postId}/publish with {send:false, share_automatically:false} → pushes changes live WITHOUT emailing subscribers
    • GET /api/v1/post_management/published → post list (also used as the session probe)

Doctrine (non-negotiable)

  1. Fail loud. Expired session, changed API contract, failed readback — every failure throws with an explicit FAIL LOUD: message. No silent degradation, no retry loops.
  2. Backup before write. editDraft snapshots the full draft JSON to projects/shakedownshuffle/content/newsletter/source-receipts/ before any PUT. Rollback = restore draft_body from the backup and re-publish.
  3. Append-only. editDraft only appends ProseMirror nodes. It never rewrites or deletes existing content.
  4. Idempotent. editDraft requires an idempotencyMarker; if the marker already exists in the body, the edit is skipped.
  5. No email without double confirmation. publish defaults to send:false. Emailing subscribers requires confirmSend:true AND confirmSendText exactly matching the post title. The skill also verifies email_sent_at stays null on no-email publishes and throws if Substack violates that.
  6. Never kill a Chrome it didn't start. stopChrome only works with the launch marker.

What ships with it

2 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

substack is a skill published in the GitHub repository notforyou23/home23 (11 stars, last pushed 7d ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 1,204 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
