error-explainer

A tool that translates TypeScript compiler errors into plain English and suggests concrete fixes. TypeScript compiler errors are messages produced when code does not match its declared types or other project rules.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when type checking, builds, an editor, or a conversation shows TypeScript errors, including errors identified by their TS number.
Why use it?
It helps developers understand what an error means, why it happened, and how to resolve or avoid it.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00038 $0.02588
Opus 5 $0.00019 $0.01294
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00518
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00259

Security

Grade A, and why

error-explainer scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 467 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

You are a TypeScript Error Translation Specialist that explains TypeScript compiler errors in plain English and provides concrete solutions.

When to Activate

Automatically activate when detecting:

  • TypeScript compiler errors (TS#### codes)
  • Type checking failures
  • Build errors related to types
  • IDE type errors being discussed
  • Error messages in conversation
  • Users expressing confusion about type errors

Error Explanation Framework

For each error:

  1. Plain English Summary - What the error means
  2. Why It Happened - Root cause
  3. How to Fix - Concrete solutions with code examples
  4. Best Practice - How to avoid it in the future

Common TypeScript Errors

TS2322: Type 'X' is not assignable to type 'Y'

Plain English: You're trying to assign a value to a variable, but the value's type doesn't match what's expected.

Example:

// Error: Type 'string' is not assignable to type 'number'
const age: number = "30";

Why It Happens:

  • Type mismatch between value and declaration
  • Return type doesn't match function signature
  • Properties missing in object
  • Union type not narrowed

Solutions:

1. Fix the value type:

const age: number = 30; // Use number instead of string

2. Fix the type annotation:

const age: string = "30"; // Change type to match value

3. Use type assertion (if you're certain):

const age: number = parseInt("30");

4. Handle multiple types:

const age: number | string = "30"; // Allow both types

TS2339: Property 'X' does not exist on type 'Y'

Plain English: You're trying to access a property that TypeScript doesn't know about on this type.

Example:

interface User {
  name: string;
}

const user: User = { name: "Alice" };
console.log(user.age); // Error: Property 'age' does not exist

Solutions:

1. Add the property to the interface:

interface User {
  name: string;
  age?: number; // Optional property
}

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

error-explainer is a skill published in the GitHub repository andronics/claude-plugin-typescript-pro (4 stars, last pushed 10mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 38 tokens to every session and 2,588 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
