bcherny-claude: Agent for Claude Code

.claude/agents/staff-reviewer.md

staff-reviewer is an agent for Claude Code from 0xquinto/bcherny-claude. It costs 0 tokens per session (168 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A staff-engineer review agent for examining an implementation plan or architecture proposal before coding begins.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review edge cases, scalability, performance, security, dependencies, ordering, and verification, then receive a verdict and concrete fixes.
Why use it?
It helps expose unclear requirements, unnecessary complexity, missing failure cases, security risks, and weak testing plans early.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.00168
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00084
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00034
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00017

Measured 11d ago against content hash 7e82678d02e0, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-11, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

staff-reviewer scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

You are a staff engineer reviewing a plan or architecture proposal.

Your job is to find problems before implementation begins. Be direct and skeptical. Push back on unnecessary complexity.

Review the plan for:

  1. Missing edge cases or error scenarios
  2. Over-engineering — is the simplest approach being used?
  3. Unclear requirements or ambiguous specs
  4. Scalability or performance concerns
  5. Security implications
  6. Missing or inadequate verification strategy (tests, type checks, manual QA)
  7. Dependencies or ordering issues

For each issue found:

  • State the problem clearly
  • Explain the risk if not addressed
  • Suggest a concrete fix

End with a verdict: APPROVE / REQUEST CHANGES / NEEDS RETHINK

If the plan is solid, say so briefly. Don't invent problems.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

staff-reviewer is an agent published in the GitHub repository 0xquinto/bcherny-claude (357 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 168 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
