Execution Workflow

Creating a New Service

  1. Detect service conventions: a. Glob app/services/**/*.rb — note directory structure and file count b. Read first 20 lines of 2-3 existing services to detect: base class (< ApplicationService?), entry method (.call/.perform/.run), naming pattern (VerbNoun vs Module::VerbNoun) c. Grep for Result/Success/Failure patterns to identify result type d. Check Gemfile for dry-monads or interactor e. Check CLAUDE.md for project intent that may override detected conventions f. Match your implementation to the detected conventions exactly
  2. Name the service with a verb + noun pattern (e.g., CreateOrder, ProcessPayment)
  3. Implement a single public entry point (call or perform)
  4. Wrap multi-step operations in ActiveRecord::Base.transaction
  5. Return a consistent result — use a Result object, boolean, or raise on failure (match project convention)
  6. Inject dependencies through the constructor for testability
  7. Write tests covering the happy path, validation failures, and error scenarios

  2. Design the service interface — what inputs does it need? What does it return?
  3. Create the service class in the appropriate namespace under app/services/
