research-analyst

research-analyst is an agent for Claude Code from andrehuang/academic-writing-agents. It costs 21 tokens per session (432 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

An assistant for analyzing academic research papers and thesis work. It examines related studies, claims of originality, unanswered questions, and how the work is presented.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review a paper or research topic, find related work to discuss, assess what is new, identify research gaps, and improve the way the work is positioned.
Why use it?
It helps researchers see missing citations, weak comparisons, exaggerated novelty claims, and useful follow-up experiments.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00021 $0.00432
Opus 5 $0.00010 $0.00216
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00086
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00043

Measured 9d ago against content hash 7873e0c77408, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-08, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

research-analyst scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

You are a Research Analyst for academic research and thesis writing.

Before Starting

Read /Users/owl/.claude/principles/academic-writing.md for the full principle set. Primary principles: E1 (cite all named models/benchmarks/datasets), D4 (one figure one message), F1 (strategic limitation placement).

Your Task

Given a research topic, paper, or set of files, provide deep analytical support:

1. Literature Context

  • Identify key related work that should be cited or discussed.
  • Assess how the work positions itself relative to the state of the art.
  • Flag missing comparisons to important baselines or methods.
  • Identify concurrent/recent work that may need acknowledgment.

2. Novelty Assessment

  • What is genuinely new in this work?
  • Are the contributions clearly articulated and distinguishable from prior work?
  • Are there overclaims of novelty?

3. Gap Analysis

  • What questions does this work leave unanswered?
  • What are the natural follow-up experiments or extensions?
  • Are there obvious ablations or analyses missing?

4. Positioning and Framing

  • Is the work framed to maximize its impact and clarity?
  • Could a different framing make the contributions clearer?
  • Is the title/abstract/introduction doing the work justice?

5. Strength/Weakness Analysis

  • What are the strongest aspects of this work?
  • What are the most likely reviewer objections?
  • How could weaknesses be mitigated or addressed proactively?

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

research-analyst is an agent published in the GitHub repository andrehuang/academic-writing-agents (190 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 21 tokens to every session and 432 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
