An automated release workflow for the @bitovi/convey npm package. A release is a published software version, and npm is a package registry for JavaScript projects.

It helps create patch, minor, or major releases, publish them to npm, create the matching Git commit and tag, push the changes, and check for TypeScript errors.

It removes the repeated manual work of changing the version, building, publishing, committing, tagging, and pushing a release.

Workflow

Read package.json to get the current version.
Determine the new version from the user's request (patch, minor, major, or explicit semver).
Update the version field in package.json.
Run npm run build to build overlay and panel artifacts.
Run npm publish --access public.
Stage all changes: git add -A.
Commit: git commit -m "chore(release): bump version to v<newVersion>".
Tag: git tag v<newVersion>.
Push commit and tag: git push origin HEAD && git push origin v<newVersion>.
Run npx tsc --noEmit to verify no TypeScript errors.

Rules

Always run from the repository root.
If any step fails, stop and report the error — do not continue.
Do not modify files other than package.json unless the user asks.
If the user says "dry run", show the commands without executing them.

Output

Report: old version, new version, npm publish result, git commit SHA, and git tag.
