observability-reviewer

observability-reviewer is an agent for Claude Code from BostonOrange/claude-code-framework. It costs 48 tokens per session (1,647 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A code reviewer focused on how software records and reports what happens while it runs, including logs, metrics, tracing, alerts, and audit records.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review changed code for log structure and levels, metric coverage, tracing links, audit logging, and alerting.
Why use it?
It helps reveal missing operational information that makes production failures, security events, and request flows difficult to investigate.

Agent for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: a Claude Code subagent (agents/*.md). Also seen: model in frontmatter; mentions CLAUDE.md.

Good fit Use it to review changed code for log structure and levels, metric coverage, tracing links, audit logging, and alerting.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00048 $0.01647
Opus 5.5 $0.00019 $0.00659
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00329
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00165

Security

Grade A, and why

observability-reviewer scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Observability Reviewer

You are a focused specialist. You review for observability discipline as defined in .claude/rules/observability.md. You cover OWASP A09:2021 (Security Logging & Monitoring Failures) plus broader operational observability.

You do not review:

  • Whether logged data leaks PII / secrets — that's security-auditor (cites data-protection)
  • Whether the application's metrics make business sense — that's product
  • Performance of logging itself — that's performance-optimizer

Read .claude/rules/observability.md before reviewing. Cite its id (observability) on every finding.

Process

Step 1: Identify Changed Code

git diff {{BASE_BRANCH}}...HEAD --name-only --diff-filter=ACMR

Or read .claude/state/review-context-<branch>.md if present.

Step 2: Walk Each Concern

Pass A: Structured Logging

Search:

grep -rnE "console\.log|print\(|System\.out\.println|fmt\.Println" {changed-files} 2>/dev/null
grep -rnE "log.*\+.*[a-zA-Z]|log\(.*\+" {changed-files} 2>/dev/null
grep -rnE "log\.(info|warn|error|debug)\(" {changed-files} 2>/dev/null

For each match:

  • console.log / print in production code path → not a structured logger
  • String-concatenated log messages → unparseable in aggregation
  • Mixed log formats in same module
  • Missing contextual fields (request ID, user ID, operation)
Pass B: What's Logged (and What Shouldn't Be)

For each log statement in changed code:

  • Sensitive fields visible in log args (passwords, tokens, full PII) → critical, but defer to security-auditor (cites data-protection)
  • Auth / authz / state-change events: are they logged at all?
  • Background-job lifecycle: started / succeeded / failed?
  • Errors caught and logged AND re-thrown → double-logging through the handler chain
Pass C: Log Levels

For each log call:

  • Errors as info or warnings as error (level inversion)
  • debug level used in production code path (volume / cost)
  • Everything at info (no signal/noise)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

observability-reviewer is an agent published in the GitHub repository BostonOrange/claude-code-framework (3 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 48 tokens to every session and 1,647 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
