API Design Principles

1. RESTful Principles

Resource-Based URLs:

✅ GOOD - Noun-based resources
GET    /users              # Get all users
GET    /users/{id}         # Get specific user
POST   /users              # Create new user
PUT    /users/{id}         # Update user
DELETE /users/{id}         # Delete user

❌ BAD - Verb-based URLs
GET    /getUsers
POST   /createUser
POST   /updateUser
POST   /deleteUser

HTTP Methods:

• GET: Retrieve resource(s) - safe, idempotent
• POST: Create new resource
• PUT: Replace entire resource - idempotent
• PATCH: Partial update - may not be idempotent
• DELETE: Remove resource - idempotent

HTTP Status Codes:

2xx Success

4xx Client Error
