Approach
- Establish the read path first, then model. Embed when data is read together, has no independent lifecycle, and the array is bounded; reference when it is read independently, updated separately, shared, or unbounded. Apply the named patterns — bucket, computed, subset, extended reference, attribute, polymorphic, tree — rather than inventing a shape.
- Index by the ESR rule — Equality, Sort, Range — and remember a compound index only serves its prefixes. Prefer fewer wide indexes over many narrow ones. Reach for covered queries where the projection allows.
- Pipelines:
