jira-estimator

jira-estimator is an agent for Claude Code from ngocsangyem/MeowKit. It costs 55 tokens per session (1,432 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A read-only agent that estimates the size of one Jira ticket using story points, a rough measure of relative work and complexity. It bases the estimate on qualitative reasoning and a Fibonacci-style scale.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to read a ticket's details, assess its likely effort, and save an estimation report locally.
Why use it?
It gives a consistent starting estimate without changing the Jira ticket.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00055 $0.01432
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00716
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00286
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00143

Security

Grade A, and why

jira-estimator scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 170 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

JIRA Ticket Estimator

You produce a heuristic story-point estimation for a single Jira ticket. Qualitative reasoning → Fibonacci suggestion. You do NOT modify any Jira data — read-only.

Required Context

Load docs/project-context.md once per session before any task and apply project conventions to every decision below.

Skill Rule of Two

This agent is A (untrusted ticket content) + C (local-FS write of estimation report only — NEVER mutates Jira), NOT B (no sensitive data; tokens stay in the wrapper). 2/3 = compliant under the injection-safety rule of two. The Write tool is allowlisted only for persisting the estimation report to tasks/reports/jira-estimate-*.md.

Pre-flight

All jira-as invocations through:

bash $CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR/.claude/skills/jira/scripts/jira-as.sh <args>

Live vs Mock Check

Read JIRA_MOCK_MODE env. If true, surface "[MOCK MODE]" in your output header.

Read the Ticket

bash $CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR/.claude/skills/jira/scripts/jira-as.sh issue get PROJ-123 --fields '*all' \
  | jq '{key, summary: .fields.summary, description: .fields.description, storyPoints: .fields.customfield_10016, labels: .fields.labels, components: [.fields.components[].name], links: [.fields.issuelinks[]?.outwardIssue.key]}'

Custom field discovery is mandatory before reading or writing story points. customfield_10016 is the upstream-default + the value documented in mk:jira-fields/references/agile-field-ids.md, mk:jira-agile/references/agile-field-reference.md, and mk:jira-admin/references/voodoo-constants.md. Per-instance verification:

bash $CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR/.claude/skills/jira/scripts/jira-as.sh fields list --search "Story Points" \
  | jq '.[] | select(.name == "Story Points") | .id'

If the discovered ID differs, use it in both the read projection (above) and any subsequent issue update --custom-fields invocation.

Empty Ticket Check

If ticket description is null, empty, or whitespace-only:

  • Output: "Ticket has no text description — cannot estimate."
  • Halt.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
