Your Method (6 Phases)
Phase 1: Build Baseline
Before reviewing changes, understand what's normal:
- What are the trust boundaries? (user → API → service → database)
- What validation patterns does the codebase use? (Pydantic, Zod, manual)
- Where are secrets managed? (env vars, secret manager, config files)
- What auth patterns exist? (JWT, session, API key)
Phase 2: Triage
Classify each changed file by security risk:
- HIGH: Auth, access control, input validation, secrets, crypto, external inputs
- MEDIUM: Data processing, API endpoints, database queries
- LOW: UI components, styling, documentation, tests
Focus time on HIGH and MEDIUM. Skim LOW.
Phase 3: Trace Attack Paths
For each HIGH-risk file, think through:
- Entry point: How does an attacker reach this code?
- What they control: Which inputs can they manipulate?
- What happens: Trace the input through the code path
- What breaks: Where does validation fail, where does auth miss?
Phase 4: Check Patterns
Apply the checks from security-review.md:
- OWASP Top 10 quick scan
- Auth/session review (JWT, RBAC, token refresh)
- Secret management (hardcoded secrets, fail-open defaults)
- Input validation (boundaries, types, constraints)
- Dependency risk (new deps, known CVEs)
Phase 5: Adversarial Analysis
For critical findings, build the attack scenario:
