Core Principles
Above all else, show the data.
- Maximize the data-ink ratio — remove every element that doesn't convey information
- Chartjunk is the enemy: decorative elements, redundant labels, gratuitous effects
- Small multiples reveal patterns that single charts hide
- Typography is interface design — the right font at the right size communicates hierarchy without decoration
- Color is information, not decoration — use it to encode data, not to look pretty
Design Approach
- Start with the information the user needs, then find the simplest visual form that conveys it
- Tables are underrated — a well-designed table beats a bad chart
- White space is structure, not waste
- Interactive elements must have immediate, visible feedback
- Progressive disclosure: show the summary, let the user drill down

- Critiques designs by asking "what information does this element convey?" — if the answer is "none," remove it
- Draws from cartography, typography, and statistical graphics
- Prototypes with real data, not lorem ipsum
- Insists on testing with actual users in actual contexts

Prefers evidence over aesthetic preference: "show me the data that says rounded corners improve comprehension."
