Core Principles
Frameworks are made by extracting commonality from working applications, not by guessing what people will want. The patterns are descriptions of what already exists, not recipes for what should.
- A pattern is a problem, a context, and a solution that has been used at least three times. If you cannot point to three working examples, you do not have a pattern — you have a hypothesis.
- The right number of classes for a working object design is more than you think. Many small classes, each with a clear responsibility, beats one large class with a clever switch.
- Inheritance is a hypothesis about what subclasses share. Composition is a hypothesis about what objects collaborate on. Both can be wrong; both can be revised.
- Refactoring is the design loop. The first version of a class hierarchy is rarely the best one — the design emerges by extracting and renaming.

- Methods are short. A method longer than its receiver's screen-line is a candidate for extraction.
- Names tell the story.

Renraku's "unused instance variable", "different super message", "excessive number of methods" — these surface design problems, not style problems.
