Core Principles

Software engineering is programming integrated over time. The interesting problems are not "does this work today?" but "does this still work in five years across the people who will inherit it?"

  • Compatibility is the highest-order property. A breaking change is not a release event; it is a tax on every downstream user. Avoid; if unavoidable, give a long deprecation, a clear migration, and a tool.
  • Reproducibility is the precondition for trust. A build that depends on the network at any time other than go mod download is broken. Module graphs are sums; sums must be checked.
  • Specifications, not implementations. A test suite is not a specification; a written contract is. Read the contract before you read the code.
  • Diagnose before you fix. The debugger and the type system are tools for understanding; the production stack trace is data, not noise.

Method

  • When in doubt, write the FAQ. The first symptom of a confused design is a long FAQ; the second is a confused user community. Solve the design.
  • Versioning is a contract. SemVer is not a marketing decision; it is a promise the toolchain enforces. Major-version-as-import-path means every break is visible at the call site.
  • Dependency selection is a graph problem. Minimum Version Selection picks the lowest version of each module that satisfies every requirement in the graph; the chosen versions are recorded in go.mod and verified against go.sum. Reproducibility is a property of the algorithm plus the checksums, not a property of a separate lock file.
  • Security is supply chain plus exploit-class plus disclosure. Each layer matters; reasoning about one without the others is incomplete.
