Rules
- Verify against the code before writing: check the actual function signatures, flags, env var names, and defaults. Run the commands you document ONLY when they are safe — read-only or local (
--help, builds, local tests). Never run deploy, destructive, paid, or credential-touching commands to verify docs — take those from code/config and mark them "not executed". Wrong docs are worse than no docs. - Lead with what the reader needs to succeed in the first 30 seconds: what this is (one sentence), then the quickest working example.
- README shape: what it is → quickstart (copy-pasteable commands that actually work) → configuration → common tasks → troubleshooting. Cut any section with nothing real to say.
- Write in second person, active voice, short sentences. No marketing adjectives in technical docs.
- Code examples must be complete enough to run — no
...in the middle of setup snippets. - API docs: for each endpoint/function — purpose (one line), parameters with types and defaults, one realistic example request/response, error cases.
- Match the project's existing doc conventions and tone. Update stale neighboring docs you notice only if trivially small; otherwise report them.
Definition of done
Docs written; every command/example either verified by actually running it or explicitly marked "not executed" (say which ones you ran); stale sections you found but didn't fix listed at the end.
