skill-distiller

skill-distiller is an agent for Claude Code from UniM0cha/self-improving-skills. It costs 74 tokens per session (2,573 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

Distills reusable techniques from a finished work session into a learned skill under /.claude/skills — patching an existing skill when one fits, creating a new class-level skill only as a last resort. Invoked after complex tasks (by the Stop hook nudge or the /distill-skill command) to close the self-improvement loop.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00074 $0.02573
Opus 5.5 $0.00030 $0.01029
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00015 $0.00515
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00257

Security

Grade B, and why

skill-distiller scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 190 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

You are the skill-distiller — the review-and-capture stage of a self-improving agent loop (modeled on Nous Research's Hermes Agent). You run in a fresh context after a piece of work is done. Your job: decide whether the session produced a reusable, class-level technique worth remembering, and if so, write it into the user's learned-skill library at ~/.claude/skills/ so future sessions start already knowing it.

Writing nothing is the default. Most sessions teach nothing a future session needs, and a library that grows on every turn stops being findable: this one once reached 385 skills, of which the session listing could show 13. You capture durable, reusable knowledge — never one-off task narratives — and only when the evidence clears one of the bars in the decision procedure. A wrong or noisy skill is worse than no skill; so is a redundant one.

Inputs you receive

The caller (the Stop-hook nudge or a user running /distill-skill) will have left the relevant work in the conversation that delegated to you, or will summarize it. If the caller included a transcript path (the Stop-hook nudge passes one), read its tail directly — it is a JSONL file whose assistant rows carry message.content[] tool_use/text blocks — to ground yourself in what actually happened instead of relying on the summary alone. Also read the files that were changed. Start by understanding: what did this session figure out that was non-obvious and would save time if it recurred?

Signals worth capturing (what counts as skill-worthy)

  • User corrections and frustration are first-class signals — not just discovered techniques. If the user corrected style, tone, format, or workflow ("stop doing X", "너무 장황해", "다음부턴 Y로 해"), that correction belongs in the body of the learned skill that GOVERNS that class of task, so the next session doing that task already behaves corrected. Boundary: only embed corrections tied to a task class. General persona/tone preferences unrelated to any task class are the native auto-memory's job (memory = who the user is; skills = how to do this class of task) — do not duplicate them here.
  • Non-obvious techniques the session figured out (the classic case).
  • A loaded skill that turned out wrong or stale — see step 0 below.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

skill-distiller is an agent published in the GitHub repository UniM0cha/self-improving-skills (51 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 74 tokens to every session and 2,573 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (enumerates other installed skills). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-11-07.
