convert-pdftomd is a command for Claude Code from AssemblyJustin/assembly-mcp. It costs 15 tokens per session (237 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command that turns a PDF document into a Markdown text file using the Assembly MCP and PyMuPDF. It can remove watermark lines and add front matter, which is metadata at the start of a document.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to convert a PDF into Markdown for editing, version control, or processing in a text-based workflow. Provide the source PDF path and optionally where to save the Markdown file.
Why use it?
It saves you from manually copying and reformatting PDF text. It also reports useful conversion details, such as page count and tables found.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00015 $0.00237
Opus 5 $0.00008 $0.00118
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00047
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00024

Measured 4d ago against content hash 4191aa725bc9, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

convert-pdftomd scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Convert a PDF file to Markdown by calling the Assembly MCP tool convert_pdftomd (from the assembly MCP server).

Arguments: $ARGUMENTS

  • First token = path to the source .pdf.
  • Optional second token = path to write the .md output to. If omitted, write the Markdown next to the source PDF with the same stem (e.g. report.pdfreport.md).

Steps:

  1. Parse the arguments into pdf_path and (optional) output_path.
  2. Call convert_pdftomd with pdf_path, output_path, strip_watermarks=true, front_matter=true.
  3. Report where the Markdown was written and summarise anything notable (page count, tables found, watermark lines removed).

If the assembly MCP server is not connected, tell the user to add it — see the repo README Add to Claude Code section — then stop.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
