claude-sdk-rs: Command for Claude Code

.claude/commands/handoff.md

handoff is a command for Claude Code from bredmond1019/claude-sdk-rs. It costs 0 tokens per session (3,848 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A command for recording the current coding session so another agent can continue later. It writes a handoff file with context, logs the work, and commits the changes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when the session is getting too large or when work needs to move to a fresh agent, optionally including a note about what to focus on next.
Why use it?
Long sessions can leave important decisions and unfinished work scattered across chat and files. A written handoff reduces the need for the next agent to reconstruct what happened from Git history.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.03848
Opus 5.5 $0.00000 $0.01539
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00000 $0.00770
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00385

Security

Grade A, and why

handoff scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 268 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Handoff — Hand off an in-flight session cleanly to a fresh agent.

Use this when the current session has grown large enough that continuing in a new context is better than pressing on. It writes planning/handoff.md so the next agent can orient instantly after /prime, logs the work, and commits.

Variables

$ARGUMENTS — optional free-text note to include in the handoff (e.g. "focus on the parser next, the renderer is blocked on the tokenizer fix"). If omitted, derive context from git history and status.md.

Execution Model

Run entirely inline. Spawn no subagents, and do NOT invoke /log-work, /commit, or /backlog-ticket as skills — their steps are inlined below.

This is deliberate and is the whole point of the command. /handoff exists to serialize the current session's context to disk, and the main agent is the only thing that holds that context. A subagent cold-starts and has to reconstruct the session narrative from git log — slow, lossy, and exactly the reconstruction the handoff is meant to prevent. Delegating also fires at the end of a long session, when re-serializing instructions into a subagent prompt costs the most.

Budget: ~3 file reads, ~3 file writes, 2 shell calls. If you find yourself spawning an agent or reading more than five files, stop — you are re-deriving something you already know.

Instructions

Step 1 — Gather (3 reads + 1 shell call)

Read:

  • planning/status.md — current focus, block statuses
  • planning/state.json — tracks[].blocks[] statuses and the existing carryover[]
  • planning/handoff.md — only if it exists (you are updating, not blindly replacing)

Run once: git log --oneline -10 && git status --short

Do not re-read log.md, the task spec, or docs/state/state-schema.md — you have the session context those would reconstruct. Read them only if you genuinely lack something.

Step 2 — Flip closed blocks, then drain durable context

2a — Flip any block this session closed to status: "closed" in planning/state.json tracks[].blocks[]. Do this before Step 4's emit-state: that authored field is the input the derivation reads, and emit-state never infers completion from status.md (the sync is one-way by design). Skipping this leaves focus and every generated surface stale until someone reconciles by hand — the engine-rs state-json-block-status-stale incident, 2026-07-03.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

handoff is a command published in the GitHub repository bredmond1019/claude-sdk-rs (23 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 3,848 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-26.
