octo-guard

octo-guard is a command for Claude Code from CES-Ltd/Lumi. It costs 8 tokens per session (448 once invoked), scanned C, a copy of octo-guard, MIT.

A command that activates two safeguards for a chosen directory: warnings before destructive shell commands and a block on edits outside that directory.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when working in a sensitive codebase or module and you want confirmation for dangerous commands plus a strict edit boundary.
Why use it?
It reduces the risk of deleting data or changing unrelated files during focused work.

Command for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: ${CLAUDE_SESSION_ID variable. Also seen: positional $N argument.

Needs its repository: it runs a file that does not travel with it, so clone the repository first. The line is /octo:guard ./packages/core.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00008 $0.00448
Opus 5 $0.00004 $0.00224
Sonnet 5 $0.00002 $0.00090
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00045

Security

Grade C, and why

octo-guard scanned grade C with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Recursive force deletehighDestructive command

rm -rf with a variable or a broad path is one typo away from removing the wrong tree.

- **Careful mode**: Warns before destructive Bash commands (rm -rf, DROP TABLE, git push --force, etc.)

What it actually says

Guard Mode - Full Safety Activation

Instructions

When the user invokes /octo:guard <directory>, activate both careful mode and freeze mode in a single command.

Activation

  1. Activate careful mode (destructive command warnings):
echo "active" > "/tmp/octopus-careful-${CLAUDE_SESSION_ID:-$$}.txt"
  1. Activate freeze mode (edit boundary enforcement):
freeze_dir="$(cd "$1" 2>/dev/null && pwd)" || freeze_dir="$1"
echo "${freeze_dir}" > "/tmp/octopus-freeze-${CLAUDE_SESSION_ID:-$$}.txt"

What It Does

Guard mode combines both safety primitives:

  • Careful mode: Warns before destructive Bash commands (rm -rf, DROP TABLE, git push --force, etc.)
  • Freeze mode: Blocks Edit/Write operations outside the specified directory

This is the recommended safety configuration for focused work in sensitive codebases.

Usage

/octo:guard src/auth
/octo:guard ./packages/core
/octo:guard /absolute/path/to/module

After activation, confirm to the user:

🛡️ Guard mode activated:
⚠️ Careful: Destructive commands require confirmation
🔒 Freeze: Edits restricted to <resolved-path>
Use /octo:unfreeze to remove edit restriction.

Argument Required

If invoked without a directory argument, activate only careful mode and ask about freeze:

⚠️ Careful mode activated (destructive command warnings).
Which directory should I restrict edits to? Example: /octo:guard src/auth

When to Use

  • Starting work in a production-adjacent codebase
  • Debugging with maximum safety
  • When you want both protections without two separate commands

See Also

  • /octo:careful — Activate only destructive command warnings
  • /octo:freeze — Activate only edit boundary enforcement
  • /octo:unfreeze — Remove freeze restriction

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
