paul:resume

paul:resume is a command for coding agents from ChristopherKahler/paul. It costs 13 tokens per session (378 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command for restoring context in an existing PAUL project from its state file and handoff notes. A handoff is a written record of work passed from one session to the next.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when continuing a project to verify its files, load the latest context, reconcile notes, and resume from the current workflow position.
Why use it?
It helps a new session understand what happened and choose one next action without repeating completed work.

Command

About the project

PAUL is a structured development workflow for Claude Code that organizes AI-assisted work into planning, implementation, and state-reconciliation steps. It is for developers who want acceptance criteria, managed context, and completed plans while building software with Claude Code. Its catalogue entries are commands that implement the workflow.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00013 $0.00378
Opus 5 $0.00006 $0.00189
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00076
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00038

Measured 5d ago against content hash 71ce1819be18, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

paul:resume scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

When to use: Starting a new session on an existing PAUL project.

Handoff lifecycle: Detects handoffs, presents content, archives after work proceeds.

<execution_context> @~/.claude/paul-framework/workflows/resume-project.md </execution_context>

@.paul/STATE.md

The workflow implements:

  1. Verify .paul/ exists
  2. Detect handoff files (use $ARGUMENTS if provided, else find most recent)
  3. Load STATE.md
  4. Present handoff content if detected
  5. Reconcile handoff vs STATE.md
  6. Determine exactly ONE next action based on loop position
  7. Display resume status with single routing
  8. After work proceeds: archive/delete consumed handoff

Key behavior: Suggest exactly ONE next action, not multiple options.

Handoff pattern: .paul/HANDOFF-{context}.md (e.g., HANDOFF-phase10-audit.md)

<success_criteria>

  • Context restored from STATE.md and/or handoff
  • Loop position correctly identified
  • Exactly ONE next action suggested (not multiple options)
  • User can proceed or redirect with context </success_criteria>
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
