thumb

thumb is a command for coding agents from coltonbearden/carrel. It costs 17 tokens per session (384 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command recipe for creating thumbnail images from PDFs, regular images, HTML files, and ICO icons using the carrel command-line tool. It explains supported inputs, output options, compatibility fallback, and expected results.

In plain words
What is it for?
Making PNG thumbnails, choosing their size and output folder, reading JSON results, handling missing files or optional binaries, and using an older conversion command when needed.
Why use it?
It turns different file types into small previews while checking the installed tool's actual options and reporting missing dependencies clearly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00017 $0.00384
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00192
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00077
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00038

Security

Grade A, and why

thumb scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Generate thumbnail(s) for: $ARGUMENTS

Run the carrel CLI via Bash. First run carrel thumb --help to confirm the exact flags available in the installed version, then map the user's request onto them — never invent flags. The expected interface is:

carrel --json thumb SRC... [--size 256] [--out-dir DIR] [--format png]

Note: --json is a global flag and must come before the subcommand.

  • SRC...: pdf (first page), images, html, or ico files.
  • --size N (default 256): thumbnail bounding box in pixels, aspect preserved.
  • --out-dir DIR (default ./thumbs): where thumbnails land.
  • --format png: output image format.

If carrel thumb --help reports that the command does not exist, the installed carrel predates it — fall back to carrel convert SRC --to png for pdf/image sources and say so.

Interpret the JSON result: report each {src, thumb, w, h} record and where the files landed. Exit code 3 means an optional binary (e.g. pdftoppm) is missing — relay the install hint from stderr.

Requires the carrel CLI on PATH. If carrel is not found, tell the user to install it with uv tool install carrel (see the repo's INSTALL notes), or run it as uv run carrel ... from the carrel repo root.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

thumb is a command published in the GitHub repository coltonbearden/carrel (1 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 17 tokens to every session and 384 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
