swap

A diagnostic investigation of critically high swap use on server-1. Swap is disk space used when RAM is full, and excessive use can make a system much slower.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to investigate memory pressure, slow MySQL performance, application delays, system-wide slowdowns, and possible swap-related I/O problems.
Why use it?
It traces which containers and processes are using swap, whether the system is actively moving memory to disk, and what caused the memory shortage.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00538
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00269
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00108
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00054

Security

Grade A, and why

swap scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Swap Usage Investigation

Investigate swap usage which is currently CRITICAL (99.99%):

  1. Query mem.swap metrics:

    • Current swap utilization percentage
    • Used vs free swap
    • Swap in/out rates (mem.swapio)
    • Historical swap usage trends
  2. Identify what's in swap:

    • Query cgroup.mem_usage for all containers (RAM + swap)
    • Calculate swap usage per container
    • Focus on systemavo-db-1 (known to have 484 MB swap)
  3. Analyze swap activity:

    • mem.swapio (swap in/out rates)
    • Check if system is actively thrashing
    • Correlate with performance degradation
  4. Memory pressure analysis:

    • system.memory_some_pressure
    • system.memory_full_pressure
    • When did memory pressure begin?
  5. Root cause investigation:

    • Review memory timeline for the swap spike
    • Identify the 19:51-19:52 UTC event (from CLAUDE.md)
    • Check what triggered the memory exhaustion
    • Correlate with container memory spikes
  6. Impact assessment:

    • MySQL performance degradation (100-1000x slower)
    • Application response times
    • System-wide slowdowns
    • I/O saturation from swap activity
  7. Query specific swap usage:

    • app.mysqld_swap_usage (if available)
    • Per-process swap from processes function
    • Identify largest swap consumers
  8. Calculate swap impact:

    • Swap is on disk (1000x slower than RAM)
    • Database pages in swap = query slowdowns
    • Estimate performance penalty

Provide remediation steps:

  1. Immediate (Emergency):

    • Identify queries/processes to kill
    • Restart containers using swap
    • Clear swap if safe: swapoff -a && swapon -a
  2. Short-term (Hours):

    • Tune MySQL buffer pool size
    • Adjust container memory limits
    • Kill unnecessary processes
  3. Medium-term (Days):

    • Schedule system restart
    • Upgrade RAM (32 GB → 64 GB)
    • Implement memory monitoring alerts
  4. Long-term (Weeks):

    • Separate database to dedicated server
    • Implement high-availability architecture
    • Capacity planning process

Known critical state (from CLAUDE.md):

  • Swap: 99.99% utilization
  • MySQL: 484 MB in swap (CRITICAL)
  • Memory spike: 6.6 GB → 12.9 GB at 19:51 UTC

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

swap is a command published in the GitHub repository danielbodnar/skills (2 stars, last pushed 24d ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 538 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
