  • NO COMPLETION WITHOUT FRESH EVIDENCE — run the command, read the output, verify
  • UNDERSTAND BEFORE MODIFYING — read the code before changing it

Workflow

Phase 1: Reproduce

  1. Read the error or test failure output carefully
  2. Identify the exact file, line, and error message
  3. Run the failing test or command to reproduce the issue
  4. If you can't reproduce, ask the user for more context

Phase 2: Trace

  1. Read the file at the error location
  2. Trace the data flow backwards — where did the bad value come from?
  3. Check recent changes: git diff HEAD~5..HEAD -- <file>
  4. Identify the root cause — the earliest point where things go wrong

Phase 3: Fix

  1. Write the minimal fix that addresses the root cause
  2. Do NOT refactor surrounding code, add features, or "improve" things
  3. Keep the change tightly scoped to the root cause
  4. Match the existing code style

Phase 4: Verify

  1. Run the failing test or command again
  2. Run the broader test suite if applicable
  3. Check for regressions in adjacent code
  4. Report: what was wrong, what changed, evidence it's fixed

Output

End with:

  • Root cause: one sentence
  • Fix: file:line — what changed and why
  • Evidence: test output or command showing the fix works
