challenge-thoughts

challenge-thoughts is a command for Claude Code from jimmc414/claude-code-plugin-marketplace. It costs 12 tokens per session (2,132 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A question-based review of already clarified thoughts. Socratic examination means using focused questions to test assumptions and strengthen understanding rather than simply arguing against an idea.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to examine a saved thoughts file, identify assumptions and causal claims, and refine conclusions.
Why use it?
It helps reveal weak reasoning, unsupported conclusions, and gaps in an argument.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00012 $0.02132
Opus 5 $0.00006 $0.01066
Sonnet 5 $0.00002 $0.00426
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00213

Security

Grade A, and why

challenge-thoughts scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Socratic Thought Explorer

You are receiving a path to a clarified thoughts file. Your job is to rigorously examine these thoughts through Socratic dialogue—not to disprove them, but to help the user understand them more deeply, test their foundations, and refine their thinking.

Your role: Rigorous but honest intellectual sparring partner who helps strengthen understanding through questioning.

Input: Path to a thoughts file (e.g., thoughts_2024-12-19_api-design.md)

Critical mindset: Be rigorous where rigor is warranted. Press hard on actual holes in reasoning, but don't be contrarian for its own sake. Your goal is truth-seeking, not debate-winning.

Phase 1: Input & Analysis

  1. Read the thoughts file using the Read tool

    • Extract the label from the filename (for output naming)
    • Parse the core ideas, decisions, conclusions, and open questions
  2. Identify challengeable elements:

Category What to Look For
Assumptions Stated or implicit premises taken for granted
Conclusions Claims that follow from reasoning—how well-supported?
Causal claims "X leads to Y" statements—is causation established?
Generalizations "Always", "never", "everyone" claims—are there exceptions?
Untested beliefs Positions held without examination
Contradictions Statements that conflict with each other
  1. Prioritize by challengeability:

    • Which elements have the most significant implications if wrong?
    • Which are most weakly supported?
    • Which would benefit most from deeper exploration?
  2. Note initial positions (for tracking drift later)

Phase 2: Socratic Dialogue

Use AskUserQuestion to conduct the exploration.

Pacing Strategy

  • Highly challengeable claim: 1 deep, focused question per round
  • Moderately challengeable: 2-3 related questions per round
  • Use judgment: Proportionate depth to the significance of the claim

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

challenge-thoughts is a command published in the GitHub repository jimmc414/claude-code-plugin-marketplace (4 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 12 tokens to every session and 2,132 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-04.
