explore-table

explore-table is a command for coding agents from jschuller/mcp-server-servicenow. It costs 20 tokens per session (532 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command for exploring ServiceNow tables, which store records such as incidents, users, and configuration items. It can inspect table structure, field types, example records, and relationships between tables.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to find tables, inspect schemas, profile data quality, and compare two tables.
Why use it?
It helps you understand unfamiliar ServiceNow data before querying or changing it.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00020 $0.00532
Opus 5 $0.00010 $0.00266
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00106
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00053

Measured 5d ago against content hash a61969d3b1b8, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

explore-table scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

/servicenow:explore-table

Route based on $ARGUMENTS:

No arguments

If $ARGUMENTS is empty:

  • Ask the user what table they'd like to explore, or suggest common starting points: incident, cmdb_ci, change_request, sys_user, sc_req_item.

Known table name

If $ARGUMENTS looks like a ServiceNow table name (contains underscores, e.g., "incident", "cmdb_ci_server", "sys_user"):

  1. Run the Explore a Table workflow from the exploring-tables skill.
  2. Get schema, pull sample records, summarize field types/mandatory/reference fields.

Compare request

If $ARGUMENTS contains "compare" or "vs" or "versus":

  • Parse two table names from the arguments.
  • Run the Compare Tables workflow — side-by-side schema comparison.

Search/find request

If $ARGUMENTS contains "find", "search", or is a plain keyword without underscores:

  • Run the Find Tables workflow — query sys_db_object for matching tables.
  • list_records(table_name="sys_db_object", query="nameLIKE$ARGUMENTS", fields="name,label,super_class,sys_id", limit=20)
  • Present matches with sample record counts.

Profile request

If $ARGUMENTS contains "profile", "quality", or "audit":

  • Parse the table name from remaining arguments.
  • Run the Data Profiling workflow — sample records, check null rates, identify sparse columns.

Fallback

For any other input, try it as a table name first:

  1. get_table_schema(table_name="$ARGUMENTS")
  2. If that fails (table doesn't exist), search for it: list_records(table_name="sys_db_object", query="nameLIKE$ARGUMENTS^ORlabelLIKE$ARGUMENTS", fields="name,label", limit=10)
  3. Present results and offer next steps.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

explore-table is a command published in the GitHub repository jschuller/mcp-server-servicenow (17 stars, last pushed 22d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 20 tokens to every session and 532 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
