launch-rhino

launch-rhino is a command for Claude Code from mcneel/RhinoAI. It costs 10 tokens per session (367 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command that starts one managed Rhino session. Rhino is 3D design software, and the router handles the session's process and connection details.

In plain words
What is it for?
Opening a Rhino session for later MCP tool calls, choosing Rhino 8, WIP, or 9 when supported, and closing the session afterward.
Why use it?
It avoids manually starting Rhino, finding an available port, and reconnecting the agent to it.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00010 $0.00367
Opus 5 $0.00005 $0.00183
Sonnet 5 $0.00002 $0.00073
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00037

Security

Grade A, and why

launch-rhino scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Spawn one Rhino managed by the router. The router (rhino-mcp-router.exe, shipped inside the Rhino-MCP-Platform yak) is the single stdio MCP server Claude Code talks to. It owns process lifecycle and port allocation — no port probing, no /mcp reconnect, no bash needed.

Argument

  • $1 — optional Rhino version (8, WIP, 9). Defaults to whatever the router was configured with at startup (typically 8).

If $1 doesn't match one of the supported versions, ask the user to clarify rather than guess.

Step 1 — spawn

Call:

mcp__plugin_rhino-mcp_rhino__spawn_slot(version="$1")

(Omit version to use the router's default.)

The call returns a ChildRhino object: { slot_id, port, pid, version }. The slot_id is an animal name (armadillo, axolotl, …).

Step 2 — report

Tell the user the slot ID and let them know subsequent tool calls should pass slot="<slot_id>".

Example:

Spawned Rhino 8 as slot armadillo (port 10500). Pass slot="armadillo" on any subsequent rhino-mcp tool call to target it.

Closing the Rhino

When the user is done:

mcp__plugin_rhino-mcp_rhino__close_slot(slot="armadillo")

For N parallel Rhinos, use /launch-rhinos instead — it handles spawn + fan-out + cleanup as one workflow.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
