generate

generate is a command for coding agents from microsoft/skills. It costs 26 tokens per session (2,558 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command for generating a complete VitePress wiki for a code repository, including a catalogue, documentation pages, onboarding guides, and diagrams. VitePress is a tool that turns Markdown documentation into a website.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create a browsable project wiki with dark-mode Mermaid diagrams and linked or local source references. Mermaid is a text format for diagrams.
Why use it?
It removes the manual work of planning and assembling repository documentation while requiring the source repository and branch to be identified first.

About the project

microsoft/skills is a collection of skills, custom agents, AGENTS.md templates, plugins, hooks, commands, and MCP configurations that give AI coding agents context for Azure SDK and Microsoft AI Foundry development. Developers use it to install selected domain-specific guidance into coding-agent environments. The catalogue entries are the repository’s own agent resources and supporting configurations.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00026 $0.02558
Opus 5 $0.00013 $0.01279
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00512
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00256

Security

Grade A, and why

generate scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Process

Execute the following steps in order:

Step 0: Source Repository Resolution (MUST DO FIRST)

Before any analysis, you MUST determine the source repository context. Do NOT skip this step.

  1. Check for git remote: Run git remote get-url origin to detect if a remote URL exists
  2. Ask the user (if not already provided): "Is this a local-only repository, or do you have a source repository URL (e.g., GitHub, Azure DevOps)?"
    • If the user provides a URL (e.g., https://github.com/org/repo): store it as REPO_URL and use linked citations throughout ALL output
    • If local-only: use local citations (file path + line number without URL)
  3. Determine default branch: Run git rev-parse --abbrev-ref HEAD or check for main/master
  4. Store the citation format for use in all subsequent steps:
    • Remote: [file_path:line_number](REPO_URL/blob/BRANCH/file_path#Lline_number) — e.g., [src/auth.ts:42](https://github.com/org/repo/blob/main/src/auth.ts#L42)
    • Local: (file_path:line_number) — e.g., (src/auth.ts:42)
    • Line ranges: #Lstart-Lend — e.g., [src/auth.ts:42-58](https://github.com/org/repo/blob/main/src/auth.ts#L42-L58)
    • Mermaid diagrams: Every diagram MUST be followed by a <!-- Sources: file_path:line, file_path:line --> comment block
    • Tables: Include a "Source" column with linked citations when listing components, APIs, or configurations

Step 1: Repository Scan

Examine the repository structure. Identify:

  • Entry points (main.*, index.*, app.*, server.*, Program.*)
  • Configuration files (package.json, *.csproj, Cargo.toml, pyproject.toml, go.mod)
  • Build/deploy configs (Dockerfile, docker-compose.yml, CI/CD)
  • Documentation (README.md, docs/, CONTRIBUTING.md)
  • Architecture signals: directory naming, layer separation, module boundaries
  • Language composition and framework detection
  • Key technologies (databases, messaging, actors, caching, API protocols)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

generate is a command published in the GitHub repository microsoft/skills (2,992 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 26 tokens to every session and 2,558 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
