In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before research or other multi-provider workflows to verify provider readiness and understand any required fixes.
Why use it?
It helps find missing tools, login problems, stopped services, or known quota issues before a multi-AI workflow starts.

Command for Claude CodeCursor

Written for Claude Code and Cursor: allowed-tools in frontmatter, but also a Cursor plugin manifest. Also seen: mentions Codex.

Runs only inside its plugin — its command needs a path that Claude Code sets for a plugin’s own hooks and for nothing else. Install the plugin, not this.

About the project

Claude Octopus is an orchestration project that sends research, design, and coding tasks to Claude Code and other AI model providers so their results can be compared. Developers use it for multi-model work, disagreement detection, reviews, persistent context, and an optional workflow that moves from discovery through delivery. The catalogue entries are its commands, skills, agents, instructions, hooks, plugins, and settings.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00010 $0.00371
Opus 5 $0.00005 $0.00186
Sonnet 5 $0.00002 $0.00074
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00037

Security

Grade A, and why

octo-preflight scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Octopus Provider Readiness

Show the shared readiness result for every registered provider. The default is a local-only static check: installation, safe configuration metadata, and known quota state. It does not contact provider services.

OCTO_ROOT="${OCTO_ROOT:-${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT:-${HOME}/.claude-octopus/plugin}}"
bash "${OCTO_ROOT}/scripts/helpers/preflight.sh"

When the user explicitly asks to verify live provider health, run the bounded live form:

bash "${OCTO_ROOT}/scripts/helpers/preflight.sh" --live

Both modes consume the Provider Registry 2.0 readiness contract. Do not run separate binary, authentication, model, quota, or network checks while rendering the result. Use reason_code and remediation from the shared objects when explaining a provider that needs attention.

Use this before /octo:embrace, /octo:research, or /octo:council to confirm provider readiness and avoid mid-workflow surprises.

Common issues:

  • Ollama requests a live check → rerun with --live; start it with ollama serve if the server is stopped
  • Codex CLI unavailable → run codex login or npm install -g @openai/codex
  • Antigravity CLI unavailable → verify agy is on PATH, then launch plain agy and complete its browser sign-in or reinstall Antigravity CLI

Run /octo:setup to install or configure any missing provider.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
