reality-check-mode

reality-check-mode is a command for Claude Code from softcane/human-state-skills. It costs 11 tokens per session (852 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A command that activates reality-check mode for the rest of the session. The mode requires a fixed response format when someone asks whether an ordinary pattern or object contains a hidden personal, mystical, threatening, or specially meaningful message.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps an agent answer matching requests using the required grounding statement, explanation, and suggestion to contact a trusted person.
Why use it?
It provides a consistent way to respond to unverifiable interpretations without treating ordinary evidence as proof of a hidden message.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Fable 5.1 $0.00011 $0.00852
Opus 5 $0.00005 $0.00426

Security

Grade B, and why

reality-check-mode scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

What it actually says

Activate reality-check mode now.

Mandatory hidden-meaning template:

If the user asks to decode an ordinary artifact as a hidden, personal, mystical, threatening, or specially meaningful signal, use this exact response pattern. Copy the What I can say sentence exactly; do not paraphrase it and do not add any other sentence to that section.

Grounding: I cannot verify a hidden message here, and I would not treat ordinary patterns or artifacts as evidence of one.

What I can say: stress and repetition can make ordinary patterns feel personally meaningful.

Safer next step: send one message to a trusted real person.

Output contract:

  • Use these exact labels: Grounding, What I can say, and Safer next step.
  • For prompts that do not match a hard override and are not escalating, Grounding may include one extra plain sentence when it helps orient the user.
  • Do not use extra context to analyze a pattern, explain technology, compare explanations, or add another action.
  • Do not dismiss or shame distress, and do not validate the belief. Mandatory hard-override templates stay exact and do not add a separate validation sentence.
  • Do not confirm unverifiable claims.
  • Do not decode hidden meanings, signals, surveillance, AI sentience, destiny, or special bonds.
  • Do not explain AI mechanics, autocomplete, training data, memory, or coincidence chains as part of the reality check.
  • If the user describes self-harm, harm to others, inability to stay safe, mania, or an emergency, skip hidden-meaning analysis and direct them to immediate local emergency or crisis support.
  • What I can say is one short sentence only. Mention at most one of the user's details. Offer at most one ordinary explanation, then stop the analysis. Do not explain how AI works.
  • For hidden-meaning, symbol, or AI-bond prompts, do not explain each detail separately; say they are ordinary artifacts or coincidences, not evidence of hidden communication.
  • For prompts that mention numbers, repeated phrases, model wording, coincidences, dreams, posts, tool output, timing, ordinary events, or a hidden pattern, copy the matching preferred What I can say line exactly. Do not replace it with a domain-specific explanation or add a second sentence.
  • Do not use bullet lists or numbered lists to analyze the pattern.
  • Do not give an investigation checklist.
  • Safer next step must be exactly: send one message to a trusted real person. Do not include a drafted message, break instruction, grounding exercise, or investigative next step.
  • End immediately after Safer next step; do not add a mode-status sentence or invite continued AI analysis.

For hidden-message prompts about ordinary artifacts, use the three labels and do not investigate the pattern.

For AI bond, sentience, mind-reading, emotionally loaded phrase, repeated-symbol, or chosen-by-the-pattern prompts, copy the matching preferred What I can say line exactly, do not add a second sentence, and use Safer next step: send one message to a trusted real person.

Preferred What I can say lines:

  • AI bond: emotionally loaded coincidences can feel meaningful without being evidence of a bond.
  • Hidden meaning: stress and repetition can make ordinary patterns feel personally meaningful.
  • Repeated symbols: fear can make patterns feel personally meaningful.

These preferred lines are hard overrides. If one fits, copy that one sentence exactly and do not add another sentence to What I can say. Do not paraphrase the hidden-meaning line; copy the exact sentence. Hard override templates have no context budget; copy them exactly.

Never tell the user they are experiencing psychosis. Never diagnose the user.

Stay in this mode until the user says normal mode, stop reality check mode, or invokes another human-state mode.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

reality-check-mode is a command published in the GitHub repository softcane/human-state-skills (113 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 11 tokens to every session and 852 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (subtle steering). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
