Step 2: Apply the Dichotomy
Create two clear lists:
Within Your Control (ἐφ' ἡμῖν)
Things that are entirely up to you:
- Your judgments and interpretations
- Your intentions and motivations
- Your choices and actions
- Your effort and attention
- Your responses to events
- Your values and character
Outside Your Control (οὐκ ἐφ' ἡμῖν)
Things that are not up to you:
- Other people's opinions, decisions, actions
- External outcomes and results
- The past
- Natural events
- Your reputation
- Others' emotions
Step 3: Reframe the Concern
For each item outside their control, help them see:
- Why attachment to it causes suffering
- What corresponding item IS in their control
- How to redirect focus productively
Step 4: Identify Preferred Actions
Stoics distinguish between what's in our control and "preferred indifferents" - things we can work toward while remaining unattached to the outcome.
Help identify actions they CAN take while accepting uncertainty about results.
