agent-brain-search

agent-brain-search is a command for coding agents from SpillwaveSolutions/agent-brain. It costs 15 tokens per session (1,569 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command for searching indexed documents by exact words and by meaning. It can search documentation, code, and tests, with filters for language and file paths.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to search a codebase or documentation for concepts, APIs, examples, tests, or files related to a programming language or path.
Why use it?
It helps you find relevant information when you do not know the exact words used in the documents. Results can be limited by number and relevance.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00015 $0.01569
Opus 5 $0.00008 $0.00785
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00314
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00157

Security

Grade A, and why

agent-brain-search scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Purpose

Performs hybrid search combining BM25 keyword matching with semantic vector similarity. This is the default and recommended search mode as it balances exact term matching with conceptual understanding.

Hybrid search is ideal for:

  • General documentation queries
  • When you need both precise term matching and conceptual relevance
  • Comprehensive search results across different document types

Usage

/agent-brain:agent-brain-search <query> [--top-k <n>] [--threshold <t>] [--alpha <a>]

Parameters

Parameter Required Default Description
query Yes - The search query text
--top-k, -k No 5 Number of results (1-20)
--threshold, -t No 0.3 Minimum relevance score (0.0-1.0)
--alpha, -a No 0.5 Hybrid blend factor
--source-types No - Filter by source type (doc, code, test)
--languages No - Filter by programming language
--file-paths No - Filter by file path patterns (wildcards supported)
--scores No false Show individual vector/BM25 scores
--full No false Show full text content (not truncated)
--json No false Output as JSON
--url No from config Server URL (env: AGENT_BRAIN_URL)

Alpha Tuning

The --alpha parameter controls the balance between vector and BM25:

  • alpha = 1.0: 100% semantic (pure vector search)
  • alpha = 0.7: 70% semantic, 30% keyword (favor meaning)
  • alpha = 0.5: 50% each (balanced - default)
  • alpha = 0.3: 30% semantic, 70% keyword (favor exact terms)
  • alpha = 0.0: 100% keyword (pure BM25)

Execution

Pre-flight Check

Before executing the search, verify the server is running:

agent-brain status

If the server is not running, start it first:

agent-brain start

Search Command

agent-brain query "<query>" --mode hybrid --top-k <top-k> --threshold <threshold> --alpha <alpha>

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

agent-brain-search is a command published in the GitHub repository SpillwaveSolutions/agent-brain (117 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 15 tokens to every session and 1,569 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
