windows-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

windows-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from 13888285815/windows-mcp. It costs 869 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository guide for Claude Code, an AI coding assistant, working on the Windows-MCP project. It documents the project, its Python development commands, architecture, and coding conventions.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when asking Claude Code to develop, format, lint, test, or understand the Windows-MCP Python server.
Why use it?
It gives the coding assistant the project context and the correct commands, so its changes and checks fit the repository. It also explains how the code is organised.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00869 $0.00869
Opus 5 $0.00434 $0.00434
Sonnet 5 $0.00174 $0.00174
Haiku 4.5 $0.00087 $0.00087

Security

Grade A, and why

windows-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

Windows-MCP is a Python MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that bridges AI LLM agents with the Windows OS, enabling direct desktop automation. It exposes 16 tools (App, Shell, Screenshot, Snapshot, Click, Type, Scroll, Move, Shortcut, Wait, Scrape, MultiSelect, MultiEdit, Clipboard, Process, Notification) via FastMCP.

Build & Development Commands

uv sync # Install dependencies
uv run windows-mcp # Run the MCP server
ruff format . # Format code
ruff check . # Lint code
ruff check --fix . # Lint and auto-fix
pytest # Run all tests (if tests/ exists)
pytest tests/test_foo.py # Run a single test file

Package manager: UV (not pip). Python: 3.13+. Build backend: Hatchling.

Architecture

The codebase follows a layered service architecture under src/windows_mcp/:

Entry point__main__.py: Registers all 15 MCP tools on a FastMCP server instance. Uses an async lifespan to initialize Desktop, WatchDog, and Analytics services. Each tool function delegates to Desktop methods. The @with_analytics decorator wraps tools for telemetry.

Desktop servicedesktop/service.py: High-level orchestrator. Manages window operations (launch, resize, switch), screenshots, mouse/keyboard actions, and clipboard. Interfaces with Tree service for UI element discovery. desktop/views.py defines data models: DesktopState, Window, Size, BoundingBox, Status.

Tree servicetree/service.py: Captures the Windows accessibility tree from active and background windows. Identifies interactive elements and scrollable areas. Uses ThreadPoolExecutor for multi-threaded UI traversal. tree/views.py defines TreeElementNode, ScrollElementNode, TreeState. tree/config.py has control type configurations.

UIAutomation wrapperuia/: Low-level abstraction over the Windows UIAutomation COM API via comtypes. core.py wraps the main automation object, controls.py has control-specific logic, patterns.py wraps UIAutomation patterns, enums.py has COM enumerations, events.py handles event subscriptions.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
