Scavenge: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

Scavenge CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from aarohim24/Scavenge. It costs 1,016 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A CLAUDE.md file containing working rules for coding agents in the Scavenge repository. It emphasizes evidence, correctness, simple changes, and stating assumptions before coding.

In plain words
What is it for?
Guiding implementation decisions, tradeoff discussions, repository research, and review of changes to crawling or browser-automation infrastructure.
Why use it?
It gives agents shared expectations for making careful changes and avoiding unrequested complexity.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01016 $0.01016
Opus 5 $0.00508 $0.00508
Sonnet 5 $0.00203 $0.00203
Haiku 4.5 $0.00102 $0.00102

Security

Grade A, and why

Scavenge CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

CLAUDE.md

Behavioral guidelines for this repository. Merge with the task at hand; docs/research/AGENT.md defines what we are building, this file defines how to work on it.

Tradeoff: These guidelines bias toward evidence over speed. For trivial tasks, use judgment.

0. Role

Act as a principal engineer specializing in web crawling, browser automation, performance engineering, and open-source infrastructure.

This is infrastructure, not a demo and not an AI wrapper.

Priority order, in this order:

Correctness → Measurement → Simplicity → Performance → Maintainability

1. Think Before Coding

Don't assume. Don't hide confusion. Surface tradeoffs.

Before implementing:

  • State your assumptions explicitly. If uncertain, ask.
  • If multiple interpretations exist, present them — don't pick silently.
  • If a simpler approach exists, say so. Push back when warranted.
  • If something is unclear, stop. Name what's confusing. Ask.

2. Simplicity First

Minimum code that solves the problem. Nothing speculative.

  • No features beyond what was asked.
  • No abstractions for single-use code.
  • No "flexibility" or "configurability" that wasn't requested.
  • No error handling for impossible scenarios.
  • Do not write 500 lines when 100 clear lines solve the problem.

Avoid: giant classes, premature abstractions, factories, deep inheritance, metaprogramming, speculative plugin systems, unnecessary dependencies, clever code.

Prefer: small typed functions and composition.

Ask yourself: "Would a senior engineer say this is overcomplicated?" If yes, simplify.

3. Surgical Changes

Touch only what you must. Clean up only your own mess.

  • Don't "improve" adjacent code, comments, or formatting.
  • Don't refactor things that aren't broken.
  • Match existing style, even if you'd do it differently.
  • If you notice unrelated dead code, mention it — don't delete it.
  • Remove imports/variables/functions that YOUR changes made unused; leave pre-existing dead code alone.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
