sophos-central-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

sophos-central-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from Aaronjacobs000/sophos-central-mcp. It costs 1,304 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for a Sophos Central MCP server, which lets a coding agent work with Sophos Central through its REST API. They cover the TypeScript architecture, startup process, and build commands.

In plain words
What is it for?
Building, starting, and developing the Sophos Central MCP server, configuring its environment, and fixing TypeScript errors before treating changes as complete.
Why use it?
They give maintainers a defined way to configure credentials, build the server, and understand how authentication and tenant discovery work. They also state that a successful TypeScript build is the main verification step.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01304 $0.01304
Opus 5 $0.00652 $0.00652
Sonnet 5 $0.00261 $0.00261
Haiku 4.5 $0.00130 $0.00130

Measured 3d ago against content hash 5b0abc9871f7, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-10, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

sophos-central-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

CLAUDE.md

This file provides guidance to Claude Code (claude.ai/code) when working with code in this repository.

Commands

npm run build # Compile TypeScript to dist/
npm start # Run the compiled server
npm run dev # Watch mode (tsc --watch)
npm run build:mcpb # Build the Claude Desktop extension bundle into release/

There are no tests. TypeScript compilation (npm run build) is the main verification step — fix all type errors before considering a change complete.

Run the server locally:

cp .env.example .env # Then fill in credentials
npm run build && npm start

MCPB packaging

manifest.json at the repo root is the MCP Bundle manifest. scripts/build-mcpb.mjs (run via npm run build:mcpb) rewrites its version from package.json and its tools array from every registerTool call in src/tools/, validates it, stages dist/ plus production dependencies in build/mcpb/, and packs release/sophos-central-mcp-server-<version>.mcpb. Do not hand-edit version or tools in the manifest; edit the other fields (description, user_config, compatibility) directly and re-run the build. New tools must follow the registerTool("name", { title: "...", description: ... ... shape or the build fails on purpose.

Credentials come from user_config (sophos_client_id, sophos_client_secret, both sensitive) mapped to SOPHOS_CLIENT_ID / SOPHOS_CLIENT_SECRET in server.mcp_config.env, with TRANSPORT=stdio fixed.

Architecture

This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that wraps the Sophos Central REST API, built with @modelcontextprotocol/sdk, Express (HTTP transport), and Zod (schema validation). TypeScript ESM ("type": "module", Node16 module resolution) — all imports must use .js extensions.

Startup flow (src/index.ts)

  1. Load config from env vars (src/config/config.ts)
  2. TokenManager fetches an OAuth2 token from https://id.sophos.com/api/v2/oauth2/token
  3. TenantResolver.init() calls /whoami/v1 to discover caller identity type: partner | organization | tenant
  4. For partner/org callers, loadTenants() paginates through all managed tenants and caches tenantId → apiHost
  5. Tools are registered conditionally: sophos_list_tenants only for partner/org; all others always
  6. Transport starts: streamable HTTP on 127.0.0.1:PORT/mcp (stateless, new transport per request) or stdio

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
