code-index CLAUDE.md

code-index CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for coding agents from achreftlili/code-index. It costs 226 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of instructions for Claude Code, a coding assistant, when working in the code-index repository. It explains which code-navigation tools to use and when to read files directly.

In plain words
What is it for?
Finding code, tracing what calls a function, inspecting symbols and modules, checking imports, and handling administrative tasks for the repository’s code index.
Why use it?
It gives the assistant a consistent way to find definitions, callers, dependencies, and file structure in an unfamiliar codebase. This reduces aimless searching and unnecessary file reading.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00226 $0.00226
Opus 5 $0.00113 $0.00113
Sonnet 5 $0.00045 $0.00045
Haiku 4.5 $0.00023 $0.00023

Measured 3d ago against content hash 7a9a2a376a33, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

code-index CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Code navigation

This repo has a code index exposed via MCP. Retrieval tools: code_search, symbol_lookup, file_outline, module_outline, where_am_i, get_symbol_body, get_symbol_bodies, callers, callees, references, trace, file_imports, recent_changes, propose_rename. Admin: admin (with op=init|setup_check|install_hook|stats|verify).

  • For ANY discovery task ("where is X", "what calls Y", "find the code that..."), use the index tools. Do not Read or Grep to explore.
  • Read files only AFTER the index has identified the exact path.
  • Use file_outline instead of Read when you only need to know what's in a file.
  • For exact identifiers (camelCase, snake_case, ALL_CAPS), use symbol_lookup. For conceptual queries, use code_search.
  • The index auto-updates on Edit/Write/MultiEdit; you don't need to refresh it.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
