activeagent AGENTS.md

A reference guide that explains the structure and conventions of the ActiveAgent Ruby codebase. It maps the main files, agent classes, providers, templates, dashboard, tests, and documentation.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when generating or reviewing code for ActiveAgent, locating its entry points and tests, understanding how agents and prompts map to Rails concepts, or finding provider and dashboard code.
Why use it?
It gives coding agents the project context needed to make changes in the right places. This reduces guesswork when navigating a codebase that connects Rails applications with AI features.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.04197 $0.04197
Opus 5 $0.02099 $0.02099
Sonnet 5 $0.00839 $0.00839
Haiku 4.5 $0.00420 $0.00420

Measured yesterday against content hash 22d0286fc642, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

activeagent AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

ActiveAgent - AI Code Generation Context

This file helps AI code generation tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, etc.) understand and work with the ActiveAgent codebase effectively.

Architecture Overview

ActiveAgent extends Rails MVC patterns to AI interactions:

Rails Pattern          →    ActiveAgent Pattern
Controllers → Agents (AI logic handlers)
Actions → Agent methods (return Generation objects)
Views → Templates (ERB prompts in app/views/agents/)

Core Classes

  1. ActiveAgent::Base - Base class all agents inherit from
  2. ActiveAgent::Generation - Lazy execution wrapper (like ActionMailer::MessageDelivery)
  3. ActiveAgent::Providers::BaseProvider - Abstract base for LLM providers

Execution Flow

# 1. Agent method is called → returns Generation (lazy)
generation = MyAgent.action_name

# 2. Execution happens only when:
generation.generate_now   # Synchronous
generation.prompt_later   # Background job (ActiveJob)

Key Patterns

Creating an Agent

class MyAgent < ApplicationAgent
  generate_with :openai, model: "gpt-4o"

  # Agent actions return Generation objects
  def analyze(text)
    @text = text  # Available in templates
    prompt(
      message: "Analyze this text",
      tools: [{
        name: "search",
        description: "Search for information",
        parameters: {
          type: "object",
          properties: {
            query: { type: "string", description: "Search query" }
          },
          required: ["query"]
        }
      }]
    )
  end

  # Tool method - name must match tool's `name` field
  def search(query:)
    SearchService.search(query)
  end
end

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
